Thank you for visiting my site.

I've included links about my publications and where I teach and how to contact me.  You'll also find information about my books and who I am and what I look like and where you can read my work online.

Briefly, I am the author of two novels, Pears on a Willow Tree and A Year and a Day.  This Angel on My Chest, my collection of unconventionally-linked short fiction, recently won the Drue Heinz Literature Prize and University of Pittsburgh Press will be publishing it in the fall of 2015.

I teach creative writing at the Converse College low-residency MFA program and in the graduate fiction program at Johns Hopkins, and often at Politics & Prose bookstore in Washington, DC.

I would love to hear from you—compliments, complaints, invitations, psychic insights—and my email address is

Or you can find the real me under my name on Facebook and Instagram (get ready for lots of pictures of pretty cocktails!).

And if you're teaching one of my books, here is a great resource from the PEN/Faulkner Foundation--FREE, open-source, downloadable lesson plans for Pears on a Willow Tree:

Just in case none of these items appeal to you, here’s a recipe for what I consider to be the best stuffing in the world.  (I’ve eaten it many times for dinner…as the main course!)
